From One Party to Another: Current TDs, MLAs and MPs who have switched parties


Dáil Éireann:
  • 1996: Michael Lowry (now Tipperary) is expelled from Fine Gael, continues to sit as an Independent.
  • 1997: Shane Ross resigns from Fine Gael and continues to sit as an Independent Senator. He is elected to the Dáil in 2011.
  • 2003: Catherine Murphy (Kildare North) resigns from Labour, elected in 2005 as an Independent before establishing the Social Democrats in 2015.
  • 2006: Catherine Connolly (Galway West) resigns from Labour, is elected in 2016 as an Independent.
  • 2007: Mary Mitchell O'Connor (Dún Laoghaire) resigns from the Progressive Democrats and joins Fine Gael, elected to the Dáil in 2011.
  • 2008: John Halligan (Waterford) resigns from the Workers' Party, is elected in 2011 as an Independent.
  • 2009: Ciaran Cannon (Galway West) and Noel Grealish (Galway East) become Independent TDs as the Progressive Democrats disbands. Cannon joins Fine Gael.
  • 2011: Mattie McGrath (Tipperary) resigns from Fianna Fáil and is returned as an Independent. Later that year, both Denis Naughten (Fine Gael - Roscommon) and Tommy Broughan (Labour - Dublin North East) resign from their parties and continue to sit as Independents.
  • 2012: Róisín Shortall (Dublin North West) resigns from Labour and sits as an Independent before establishing the Social Democrats in 2015.
  • 2017: Stephen Donnelly (Wicklow) originally elected in 2011 as an Independent, helps establish and then resigns from the Social Democrats. After a second spell as an Independent, he joins Fianna Fáil this year.
Northern Ireland Assembly/UK House of Commons:
  • 2001: Peter Weir (Strangford - Assembly) resigns from the Ulster Unionist Party and is re-elected to the Assembly as a Democratic Unionist in 2003.
  • 2003: Arlene Foster (Fermanagh - Assembly) resigns from the Ulster Unionist Party and joins the Democratic Unionist Party in the next year. She is accompanied by the MP for Lagan Valley, Jeffrey Donaldson.
  • 2007: Jim Allister (North Antrim - Assembly) resigns from the Democratic Unionist Party and founds Traditional Unionist Voice. He is returned as a TUV MLA.
  • 2010: Paula Bradshaw (Belfast South - Assembly) resigns from the Ulster Unionist Party and joins the Alliance Party while a sitting councillor. She is elected to the Assembly in 2016.
